WELCOME

Welcome to Black Books Matter UK. Creating a space that amplifies stories written by black authors and illustrators and books with characters that look like those of the hands they fall in.  Allowing people to feel seen and heard, and sharing culture in a way that allows us to understand all those we share our space with.

In summer 2020 with a humble start, we succeeded our Phase One target! We crowdfunded £4,000 of diverse books, which went straight  into homes during the lockdown period with the help of some wonderful volunteers and working with various community organisations across London. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated, those who held fundraisers, read on our story times to help us get on our feet.

We’ve managed to hit our Phase Two target for fundraising (£11,000) which is allowing us to be able to start planning our literacy provisions, creative writing clubs and Theatre in Education department. We managed to do this with the help of The Phoenix Fund, and have made a strong start to reach our phase three target of raising £20,000 which are still aiming for. The beauty of text and stories is that we can create our own narrative, and here at black books matter we strive to educate, express and evolve to continue to create space for the diverse world we live in - through the power of books.
